Getting my ass handed to me at poker

Once upon a time, I was a decent poker player - when I was in university, I used to head out to Gardena, California, where there were a few poker clubs such as the Normandie and the Horseshoe.  On other occasions I might hit the Commerce Club or the Bicycle Club when my roommate would lend me his car.

In those days, Texas Hold ‘Em was not the most popular game - the poker clubs still played a lot of draw poker, Omaha, and my favorite, Lowball - you know the one where you try to get the worst hand possible?  I won three jackpots in a month playing Lowball, even though I only played about 10 hours a week.  All poker games were limit games - so perhaps one could say that I was a moderately successful limit player, though I had many bad sessions as well. Palace Group refuse to pay winnings

A player made a post on Casinomeister.com which complained that he had been found to be in breach of the following term:

“Before any withdrawals are processed, your play will be reviewed for any irregular playing patterns e.g. playing of equal, zero margin bets or hedge betting, placing single bets using your entire or the majority of your account balance and bonus, all of which shall be considered irregular gaming for bonus play-through requirement purposes. Should the Casino deem that practices such as this have been utilized, the Casino reserves the right to withhold any cashins and/or confiscate all winnings.”

TV chef forced to stop moonlighting as Prime Minister

If any of you have been following the news on Thailand, you may have noticed that the Prime Minister, Samak Sundaravej, has been relieved of his office and duties following a court verdict finding him in breach of the Constitution, which prevents ministers from being gainfully employed or earning revenue from a private enterprise.

In this particular case, the prime minister was found to have breached the Constitution for being paid to appear in a number of TV shows as the presenter.  Granted, he has been doing this for years - but upon taking office as Prime Minister, he should have relinquished his duties as a TV chef. Japan Jump Start - or false start?

Today I got my daily Japan Times news summary- don’t always read it, sometimes it ends up in the junk mail like it did today, but today for some reason I decided to have a look - and at the top was an interesting offer - “Secrets to Doing Business in Japan Revealed!” - for only $1, I’d get the free e-book and access to the Japan Jump Start site and forums.

That was too good an offer to refuse - so I visited the site and read about all of the potential secrets about doing business in Japan - and even though I have trusted friends in Japan who are kind enough to teach me these things, I felt there would be no harm in finding out what some of the “big” successes in Japan had to say.

8888, golf balls, and the hind end of an elephant

elephanthindend.jpgYesterday was one of those days which started off very badly… I had been planning to go to the office as usual because there were a lot of things that I needed to take care of.  But suddenly I was told my son was “performing” at school and my wife really wanted me to go… I said I was too busy then I left for the office.

But then I remembered an email someone had sent me recently about a professor and a jar - a great read and very thought-provoking - and it occurred to me that I’d better take care of the golf balls… so I called my office, made sure nothing important was waiting for me, and then told my wife I’d see her at school. Spearmaster at the 1984 Olympics - part 2

sameagle.gifDespite what one might think, providing security at the Olympics was actually quite simple, in that very few incidents occurred - I spent most of my time walking around and checking the various posts, and figuring out how many pizzas to order that night!

One of the funnier things I encountered during my rounds, however, was that some athletes kept leaving their keys in the doors!  Each time, I would debate whether to pull the key out, or if I was going to inconvenience someone who had just run to the bathroom or something… but I followed my common sense and would collect the key to take down to the security post, while writing a note to ask the room occupant why they left their keys in the door. Spearmaster at the 1984 Olympics

84olympics3.gifHi all - been a long time since I had any updates, and been quite busy and travelling quite a bit.  Today, I thought I’d share with you the story of how I made it to the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

At the time, I was studying (well ok, that’s a bit of a stretch) at the University of Southern California - and I saw an ad inviting people to apply as security personnel for the Olympic Villages. Read the rest of this entry »

Where did all my disk space go - more stuff…

After my last post about missing disk space, I thought everything had been fixed… only to watch it quickly creep back up to nearly full. One solution I discovered today was to restrict the amount of space reserved for system restore - open up a DOS (command) prompt with administrator privileges (normally you’d right-click on the shortcut and choose “Run as administrator”) - and then type the following command:

vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=5GB

where /On=C: and /For=C: represent the drive where the files are stored, and for which drive - if you have only one hard disk, both will be C: - but if you have more than one drive, change /On to one of the other drives for better performance and security. /Maxsize=5GB is the amount of space you want to allocate - in this case 5 gigabytes. Where did all my disk space go?

For some time now, I’ve noticed that my notebook always seems to be quite full - I regularly move data onto an external hard drive, uninstall programs that I don’t use, and yet I always seem to have less than 5% disk space left.

What was most unusual was that every time I went through my cleaning routine, I would go to check my disk space - and the amount available didn’t increase, it decreased! Read the rest of this entry »

The world’s largest water fight…

… takes place every year in Thailand from April 13th-15th during the Thai New Year, more commonly known as Songkran.

Though the Guinness Book of World Records obviously hasn’t certified this fact, an estimated 60 million people (well, the population of Thailand, give or take a few million, plus many foreigners) throw and splash water at each other over this three-day period which celebrates the arrival of the new lunar year.
